What is First Coast Healing Hands?

The First Coast Child Protection Team (CPT) is a multidisciplinary, medically directed program dedicated to easing the impact of child abuse and neglect on young victims. The core philosophy of this initiative is rooted in the recognition that addressing these distressing cases requires the combined expertise of diverse professionals to safeguard children. Our team Is comprised of physicians, nurses, and medical professionals who conduct comprehensive assessments and interventions, provide therapy, and facilitate service referrals to community agencies, evaluating reported child abuse and neglect cases.

“You can spend a lifetime trying to forget a few minutes of your childhood.”

Kristen Butler

In 2020, the CPT reviewed over 28,000 reports from the State of Florida Child Abuse Hotline pertaining to children’s medical and victim needs. Additionally, the team conducted over 3,000 forensic/specialized interviews and more than 2,000 medical evaluations and consultations for suspected child victims, offering referrals to therapy services. They also organized training events for the community and initiated the coordination of the area’s Sleep Safety Program.

The funding for the CPT primarily comes from a State of Florida Children’s Medical Services contract within the Florida Department of Health. However, the rising caseload and severity of injuries in cases they handle strain the resources allocated by the state. Consequently, the team also relies on donations from the community throughout the year.
